Following are two collections of OHV routes in the Gateway area of western Colorado. Download the file(s) of interest. Click on a file, and GoogleEarth will show the routes.

John Brown Canyon

A6Routes

This collection of routes is located about 25 miles northeast of Gateway and about 6 miles southwest of Whitewater, all north of SH 141.

Google Earth color legend:
· GREEN routes - either existing 4WD or "to be built 4WD" route called Snyder Flats Road and is to be a re-route of the Tabeguache Trail system connecting Hwy 141 with Little Park Road.
· PURPLE routes - single track routes. BLM is supposed to build these routes in summer '09.
· BLUE routes - alternate single track routes or in some cases existing 4WD not to be used.

Granite Creek Inventory

This collection of 5,671 route segments is located around Gateway. Yes - 5,671. Don't ride them all at once ;-)

Some of the routes are in Utah, so have the appropriate sticker/registration or ride street-legal motos.

Google Earth color legend:
· WHITE routes - county maintained 2WD roads; currently I don't think anyone on the Colorado side has issues with OHVs on them.
· RED routes - 4WD of various degrees.
· BLUE routes - basically for Jeeps or OHVs and can be very rough. OHVs here includes street legal motorcycles.

BLM

The BLM has begun two processes that will affect motorized recreation in the Gateway area. The Grand Junction Field Office has begun the process of revising its Resource Management Plan and also updating the Recreation Area Management Plan for the 198,000-acre Gateway Special Recreation Management Area. Excerpts from their press releases are shown on the right.

Visit the  Grand Junction Field Office 2008 Resource Management Plan web page  and the  Gateway Area Recreation Management Plan web page  for information about these two very important processes. Your participation is encouraged and is essential if the voice of the motorized public is to be heard.

"November 6, 2008 - The Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Field Office is asking the public to help identify issues to be addressed as it begins revising its Resource Management Plan for 1.2-million-acres of BLM lands primarily in Mesa and western Garfield counties."

"December 20, 2007 - The Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Field Office (GJFO) has kicked off a recreation planning effort for the 198,000-acre Gateway Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) that would amend the 1987 Grand Junction Resource Area Resource Management Plan. The amendment would change the current RMP by designating travel opportunities; addressing commercial, competitive, special area, and organized group activities and events; identifying recreation needs; and defining recreation management objectives. The planning area is located in remote Mesa and Montrose Counties; the planning process is anticipated to take about 12 months to complete."

Gateway Colorado information

This information is from  Colorado.com - the official site of Colorado tourism.

A general store, cafe and tiny motel mark one of Colorado's westernmost communities, aptly dubbed Gateway. The town's name denotes its location at the entrance to Colorado from bordering Utah, and the surrounding landscape reveals something of both states. This rugged and remote town near John Brown and Unaweep Canyons offers access to untouched backcountry adventures in the La Sal Mountains and Uncompahgre National Forest.

Location: 53 miles southwest of Grand Junction on Colorado 141
Elevation: 4590               Population: 2342

Roads in and around Gateway are clear but there are icy/snowy spots in Unaweep Canyon.

This information is from  Gateway Canyons Resort.

Gateway, Colorado, is located south of Grand Junction, Colorado, where the West Creek flows into the Dolores River. Surrounded by the Uncompahgre Plateau, Pinon Mesa and La Sal Mountains, this quaint, tight-knit community is embraced by tall canyon walls and cottonwoods and a vivid blue sky.

Now, with the opening of Gateway Canyons Resort, the local community once again has a grocery store and restaurants for its Gateway Canyons. There are new jobs created in the town and a renewed interest in this once-forgotten rural community.

Affordable and well-appointed accommodations are available at the Kiva Lodge, the Dolores River Inn and the Canyon Casitas.

Rick's note: The Resort includes the following: Paradox Grille, Kiva Cafe, Outpost General Store, Outpost Outfitters Gear Shop, Adventure Center, and the Medicine Wheel Spa.

The Dolores River Inn has smaller rooms (310 sq ft, $119 lowest) and larger suites (654 sq ft, $189 lowest).

The Kiva Lodge has Standard Rooms through Grand Kiva Suites (485-1100 sq ft, $239-$599).

The Canyon Casitas are nestled on the west side of the resort property at the mouth of Lumsden Canyon. With sleeping space for up to four people, these cabin-styled, two-bedroom lodging units are perfect for families or groups of friends. The Canyon Casitas are pet friendly. ($309-$325)

I have no financial or commercial interest in any business mentioned on this site, nor do I derive any gain or consideration therefrom. Just lettin' you know what's in Gateway.
