Maintenance schedule

The maintenance schedule in the Owner's Manual for the "standard motorcycle, street legal (with limited power engine)" shows an initial service at 620 miles (1000 km) and then service every 3,100 miles (5,000 km) thereafter. Wow, those are long intervals for someone like me who services my dirt bikes every 500 miles. I said the same thing about my '08 TE 610.

2/16/09 - 104 miles

I changed the oil and oil filter (earlier than the specified maintenance schedule change). I used Honda GN4 20W50 oil and a Hi-Flo HF154 filter. I may switch to the HF563 when it becomes available. The used oil coming out did not look black at all, sorta dark green. The oil filter had a number on it: 8000B0593, same as my '08 TE610 oil filter (see picture to the right for items mentioned here).

The magnetic drain plug (lower left) had some gooey black stuff on it, but not much. When I wiped it off with a rag, it left a slight metallic smear on the rag.

When I took out the front bag filter (smaller one next to the oil filter), the o-ring between the plastic retaining cap and the filter had a pig tail on it; I plan to replace the o-ring. It's probably not critical, but who knows? The filter had some small red debris on the surface that washed off easily in solvent. I didn't see much else on the filter.

The rear filter set (two nested bag filters) had very little debris and cleaned up easily with a solvent wash. The retaining cap o-rings looked fine.

After cleaning everything, I reinstalled all items, buttoned up the bottom end, and added the oil.

5/1/09 - 680 miles

I changed the oil and oil filter. I used Honda GN4 20W50 oil and a Hi-Flo HF563 filter. The 563 is the recommended filter for the '09 TEs. The used oil coming out did not look black at all.

The magnetic drain plug (lower left) had some gooey black stuff on it, but less than the first change.

I replaced the front bag filter o-ring.

I plan to change oil and oil filters every 1,000 miles or so from here on out and unless there is something remarkable to see, I won't be posting any more pictures.
